LUMINISCENCE uses the entire interior of Westminster Cathedral as its canvas. Every arch, column, dome and marble surface becomes part of the experience.
As the lights dim, thousands of precisely mapped projections spread across the cathedral's architecture while the Lux Aeterna choir performs live around you. Hugh Bonneville's narration guides the story, taking you through London's history and the remarkable journey of Westminster Cathedral.
The combination of architecture, music, technology and live performance creates a theatrical production that transforms the cathedral into a living performance space.
Why Westminster Cathedral
Completed in 1903, Westminster Cathedral serves as the mother church of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales. It is recognised instantly by its distinctive striped red brick exterior and Byzantine-inspired architecture.
Inside, the scale is extraordinary. The cathedral rises beneath soaring domes, enormous arches and intricate marble columns constructed using more than 100 different varieties of marble sourced from around the world.
Yet despite its beauty, much of the cathedral has remained visually unfinished for more than a century. The upper domes and vaulted ceilings were originally intended to be covered in elaborate mosaics. Financial constraints prevented those designs from ever being completed, leaving large sections of exposed brick visible for more than 120 years.
LUMINISCENCE changes that.
Using detailed historical research and advanced digital projection technology, the experience recreates the mosaics that architect John Francis Bentley originally envisioned. This allows you to see the cathedral as it was intended to appear.

The technology behind LUMINISCENCE
Although the visuals feel almost magical, the production is built on an extraordinary amount of technical precision.
Before the show could be created, Westminster Cathedral was digitally scanned and modelled in three dimensions. Every architectural detail, from columns and arches to domes and decorative surfaces, was mapped so projections align perfectly with the building itself.
The production uses the cathedral's architecture as part of the storytelling.
As the performance progresses, light flows across the walls, ceilings and domes, gradually revealing details of the building while recreating decorative mosaics that were never physically completed.
The projections are accompanied by spatial sound technology, allowing music and narration to move naturally through the cathedral's vast interior.
Hugh Bonneville narrates the entire experience
One of the defining elements of LUMINISCENCE is its narration.
The story is voiced by Hugh Bonneville, the London-born actor best known for portraying Lord Grantham in 'Downton Abbey', alongside roles in 'Paddington', 'Notting Hill' and numerous stage and television productions.
His narration provides the thread that connects the evening. Hugh guides you through London's evolution and the story of Westminster Cathedral in a calm, reflective style that complements both the visuals and the music.
The script itself was specially written by BAFTA and Olivier Award-winning writer Tim Whitnall.
